About Us

Inspired by Emile Durkheim’s view that education is essential to transmitting knowledge and values to future generations, the Gesner Lamothe Foundation (GLF) was established in Canada to support the educational needs of school-aged children in Haiti. In response to the declining quality of education and the physical deterioration of many schools, our foundation is committed to improving living conditions and helping young people build a brighter future. Through targeted charitable initiatives, we aim to make a meaningful and lasting impact—empowering the next generation through access to quality education.

We all agree that education is one of the most important social factors for human development. It is, by the way, a social determinant that influences an individual's health standard of living in society. Access to education varies from country to country; for example in the most industrialized countries education is a primary need. For Canada and the United States, going to school is a right that every child has, from elementary to high school age. In less industrialized or poor countries, governments may not have enough funds to subsidize schools to provide basic primary education to the population. Therefore, there are many children in these poor countries who have never attended school. This is the case for the majority of people in Haiti. Haiti being considered one of the poorest countries of the Caribbean with a population of 11,402,528 inhabitants over an area of 27,750 km2, the minimum wage of the labor market is 500 gourdes equivalent to US $ 5.00 per eight-hour working day. All those explain that the majority of Haitian families cannot afford the luxury of sending their children to school. Twenty-one percent Haitian children aged between six and nine do not go to school (Le Nouvelliste.com, Sept 2018) From 2012 to the present day with the unfolding natural disasters and political turmoil, the number of orphaned out-of-school children has only increased. Thus, all these sad facts cited above push the Gesner Lamothe Foundation to take birth.
